Sundre, Alberta

The southern Alberta town of Sundre is a gateway to the west country, where outdoor adventure lives and scenic views are abundant. Sundre is located at the base of the Rocky Mountains along the Red Deer River, approximately 1 hour southwest of Red Deer and 1 1/2 hours northwest of Calgary. Nearby are the town of Olds, the city of Airdrie, and Rocky Mountain House to the north. Sundre has a population of around 2,700 people and a real estate market of approximately 1,700 homes. The town economy is driven primarily by natural resources, including agriculture, oil and gas, and tourism.

Located along the famed "Cowboy Trail", Sundre is proud of its western heritage, a pride that is reflected on the streets and during our yearly festivals and events. Sundre hosts two annual rodeos: the Sundre Pro Rodeo, and the Bulls N' Wagon. Sundre's love of the countryside and cowboy heritage is evident also in the prime recreational activities chosen by our residents: camping, riding, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities are some of the most popular here. Sundre's small size and proximity to the mountains makes the area an ideal place for wildlife-watching: here you'll often see deer, elk, bears, mountain sheep, goats, moose, and even the occasional heard of wild horses.

Sundre retains its small-town friendliness throughout the businesses you'll find here as well. You'll find small locally-owned stores, restaurants, cafes, and services in addition to full-service grocery stores and amenities. For a wider selection of brand names and big-box stores, both Red Deer and Calgary are nearby. The town is serviced by River Valley School and Sundre High School.

I lived in and around Sundre for six years and I still frequent the town as I love the services it provides and the small town hospitality. If you are looking for small town living within an hour of two major cities - Calgary and Red Deer, with all the amenities (pool, rink, curling, groceries, unique shops - you name it) then Sundre is the town for you. Olds is also just a quick 20 minute drive east and has a theatre, big box stores, a college and anything else you might be searching for.
